Guide to the new new MusicBot

Out with the old, in with the new.

The last music bot, MurasakiMusicBot, was nothing short of a failure. So this time I’ve got a much much better bot. The new bot has far greater reliability and stability. It should for the most part, work 100% of the time as opposed to the previous bot. As well as it’s robustness the new bot also supports a load more features. The bot can send now playing info, have multiple instances, and it can play basically anything not limited to most imaginable audio file formats, audio streams from the internet, or video based sites such as YouTube. (A full list of supported sites, file formats, and codecs will be included at the end of this post.)

Using the Bots:

It is pretty straight forward when it comes to the commands. There’s a couple more than before but no need to worry. Keep in mind that this time the bot only responds to commands in the channel chat. The relevant commands are as follows:

!playing – Display the currently playing song

!next – Playback the next track (only when a playlist is active)

!prev – Playback the previous track (only when a playlist is active)

!stop – Stop playback

!volume up – Increase the volume

!volume down – Decrease the volume

!volume <value> – Set the volume to <value> (between 0 and 100)

!stream <url> – Stream from <url>; this may be http-streams like shoutcast / icecast 

!yt <url> – Playback an <url> via external youtube-dl (if enabled); beware: the file will be downloaded first and played back afterwards, so there might be a slight delay before playback starts

 

If you would like to use youtube or any other video sharing site or audio sharing you need to use the !yt command. The parameters are the same, so your url will follow the !yt command just like with !vlc. When using !stream you have to have the URL to the stream you would like to play. Most sites don’t offer the URL directly but you can download a .pls or .m3u file containing the URL for your web enabled media players to play.

!stream will not work with youtube URLs

The more the merrier.

With the ability to have multiple instances or bots we can have seperate listening sessions. Each instance is independent from one another and can play its own music and take its own commands. With this feature it is my intention to set up a RadioBot, which will play 24/7 music (such as the christmas music bot previously did), and the MusicBot which will be primarily for user chosen playback.

RadioBot: Equipped with a playlist of various music streams, it will never idle and have constant playback. With the streams set up in a playlist you are able to easily switch through preset stations sorta like a good ol’ fashioned radio. Using !next and !prev changes between each station. (Let it be noted that once you reach the end of the list that when you hit !next the station wont change and you will have to use !prev to cycle back to the top) RadioBot can also accept commands to play YouTube videos and other streams, once the playback has finished it will default back to the preset stations.

MusicBot: Simply intended for use by any user to play YouTube and Soundcloud songs. It will not default to anything once playback has completed allowing for easier playing of videos.

Additionally another feature not mentioned before is a Web Interface where a user can sign into and change what is playing as well as upload mp3s and create playlists if this sounds like a feature that interests you maybe we can use it in the future but for now it it not needed.
